Purpose

The purpose of this project is to deepen students' understanding of equations and inequalities by connecting them to real-world scenarios through an engaging, hands-on community service project. Students will take on the roles of problem solvers and planners, applying mathematical concepts to design and implement events like a School Garden Initiative or Healthy Snack Stand, directly addressing community needs. This initiative encourages critical thinking and nurtures students' ability to make innovative connections between mathematical learning and meaningful community involvement.

Learning goals

Students will learn to apply equations and inequalities to real-world scenarios, focusing on community service projects. They will develop skills in problem-solving and critical thinking by designing and analyzing mathematical models related to budget constraints and resource allocation. Through collaborative activities, students will refine their ability to translate verbal descriptions into algebraic expressions, while the use of peer feedback will enhance their understanding and adaptability. By the end of the project, students will confidently articulate the role of mathematics in planning and executing successful community initiatives.

Products

Students will collaboratively plan and execute a 'School Garden Initiative', using equations to design the layout and calculate resource needs, culminating in a community showcase event. OR students will organize a 'Charity Sports Event', applying inequalities to determine schedules and logistics and then presenting their outcomes at an in-house exhibition. OR students will implement a 'Healthy Snack Stand' project where students use their budgeting equations to manage inventory, showcasing their process during a school fundraising exhibition. These projects offer an opportunity for practical application and community engagement, encapsulating their newfound mathematical skills.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive 'Mathematical Escape Room' event where students work in teams to solve equations and inequalities that unlock key elements of organizing a community service project, such as budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. This engaging activity will immediately set the context for how mathematical concepts translate into real-world applications, energizing students with a hands-on challenge that introduces the skills they will develop over the course of the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a showcase event where they can present their community service project proposals featuring mathematical models. During the exhibition, they will demonstrate their understanding by explaining how equations and inequalities were used to predict outcomes and allocate resources. Attendees, including school principals, teachers, and community members, can engage with students through interactive stations highlighting different aspects of their projects, such as the school garden initiative and charity sports event planning.
