Purpose

Over four weeks, first graders will engage in a hands-on project designed to foster empathy, kindness, and support for elderly friends. By partnering with the Center of Longevity, students will co-design fun and simple daily exercises and create nutritious snacks that promote health and joy for older adults, such as grandparents or elderly neighbors. Through collaborative activities, students will practice effective communication while developing self-directed learning skills, fostering an academic mindset, and enhancing community awareness.

Learning goals

Students will explore how they can impact the well-being of elderly friends through developing and sharing simple exercise routines and healthy snack ideas. Through collaborative group activities, they will design and present creative plans, such as posters or Canva projects, that emphasize kindness, healthy habits, and community engagement. Engaging with community partners like the Center of Longevity, students will practice effective communication by listening and speaking politely to learn about the needs of older adults. They will reflect on their progress with personal and peer feedback, fostering self-directed learning, and an academic mindset.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will collaborate to design and create an interactive exercise guide and a recipe booklet aimed at promoting the well-being of elderly friends. Using art supplies and Canva, they will develop visually engaging posters to display their exercises alongside nutritious snack recipes. The final presentation will include a community event where students will share their creations, conduct live demonstrations, and engage in discussions with elderly community members from the Center of Longevity. This process will include opportunities for self-reflection, peer-to-peer feedback, and iterative revisions to enhance their final products.

Launch

To kick off this project, invite a guest speaker or virtual participant from the Center of Longevity to share stories about the joys and challenges of aging, highlighting real-world examples of kindness and healthy living. Following this, students will engage in a brainstorming session, where they generate ideas for simple activities or snacks they can create. Conclude with a collaborative discussion where students set personal goals and express their initial thoughts on what they want to accomplish by the end of the project.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host a "Healthy Friends Fair" where they will present their completed plans to their classmates, teachers, and invited elderly guests from the community. The fair will feature interactive stations with student-designed exercises, snack demonstrations, and poster displays showcasing what they've learned about supporting elderly friends. Guests will have the chance to participate in activities and engage in discussions with the students, allowing the young learners to practice effective communication and collaboration while celebrating their achievements.
