Students will immerse themselves in storytelling sessions with community partners, visiting historical sites and engaging in reflective group activities to explore the relationships and experiences of explorers, indigenous peoples, and settlers in California, laying the foundation for their mural creation by deeply understanding historical narratives and identifying lessons for equitable societies.

Students will use their empathy insights from the Chumash field trip and expert visits to collaboratively define key challenges faced during the explorer, mission, and rancho periods of California, articulating how these challenges can inform our present choices for equitable societies.

Students will brainstorm diverse ideas for the class mural and spoken word presentations, drawing inspiration from their research on early California history, and collaboratively develop innovative approaches to express historical narratives and social justice themes.

Students will create low-fidelity mural prototypes that incorporate historical research and spoken word drafts, integrating peer feedback to refine their ideas in alignment with the project's essential question.

Students will conduct spoken word presentations, and historical interpretations while preparing for the final exhibition.
