Purpose

Students will actively explore their personal and family histories to understand the transforming effects of time. Through guided interviews and collaboration with community partners, they'll gather oral histories and analyze personal artifacts. This journey fosters deeper appreciation of individual narratives while honing critical thinking, narrative, and analytical writing skills. Students will creatively express their findings through poems, quick writes, and artistic presentations. By sharing their stories, they gain insights into how past experiences shape identity, community, and potential future paths.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deep understanding of how personal and family histories influence identity and growth over time. They will enhance their skills in reading comprehension and analysis through literature exploration and research activities linked to historical narratives. Additionally, students will refine narrative and poetry writing techniques as they craft reflections and document oral histories. By examining personal artifacts and historical landmarks, students will creatively illustrate stories of their family's journey and gain insights into the broader community's evolution, fostering meaningful connections and understanding.

Products

Throughout this project, students will create a rich tapestry of artifacts that integrate personal and collective histories. They'll produce a project board that creatively displays oral history interviews and genealogical findings alongside poetry and reflective journal entries. Students will draw and illustrate personal artifacts and historical landmarks to visually narrate their family's journey through time. These elements will culminate in an exhibition open to the school and family members, presenting their insights in a compelling, narrative-driven format.

Launch

Begin the project by reading excerpts from "Anthem," "The Alchemist," and "The Great Gatsby" to introduce themes of time, personal growth, and societal impact. Follow this up with a group discussion to explore characters' transformations and how their past shapes their identity. Engage students in writing quick reflections on their initial thoughts about how time influences their own lives, setting the stage for deeper exploration throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will exhibit their final project boards, which showcase their personal and family history through narrative writing, poetry, and artifacts. They will host an exhibition for both the school community and their families, featuring oral readings of their personal poems, and a display of interviews, drawings, and creative illustrations. The exhibition will provide an interactive space where attendees can engage with students' work, ask questions about the historical and personal connections they've uncovered, and view the creative ways students have represented their stories through time.
