Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in a transformative, hands-on project where they actively reimagine and design systems or processes to invoke positive change within their communities. This four-week journey focuses on honing creativity, self-reflection, critical thinking, and effective communication as students collaboratively construct an Adventure Playground. By engaging with community partners, students will manifest their ideas into impactful solutions, share progress through innovative exhibitions, and cultivate a sense of belonging and self-awareness.

Learning goals

Students will apply creativity and critical thinking to redesign existing systems within their communities, utilizing multimedia and technological tools. They will enhance their communication skills by creating and presenting narratives of their project journeys, fostering a deeper understanding of personal growth and socio-emotional experiences. Through collaboration with community partners, students will develop prototypes or artistic expressions that address authentic local needs, engaging in continuous reflection and iteration to refine their solutions.
Standards

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct an Adventure Playground, utilizing their insights from workshops with local artists and makerspaces. Throughout the project, students will create and refine multimedia presentations to document their creative process, showcasing their designs and prototypes. By the end of the four-week period, each student will have contributed to a comprehensive digital portfolio, capturing their innovative ideas and narratives, which will be shared during the Innovation Fair.

Launch

Start the project with an 'Innovation Lab Day,' where the classroom transforms into a dynamic pop-up makerspace. Different corners feature art supplies, digital tools, and prototype materials that students use to collaboratively brainstorm and imagine potential projects. Community partners set up a scavenger hunt, the 'Visionary Voyage Adventure,' peppered with design challenges throughout the school, encouraging students to discover creative ideas and practice problem-solving from the very beginning. This engaging kickoff day immerses students in a world of creativity and possibility, setting the stage for the coming weeks of exploration and innovation.

Exhibition

Students will culminate their projects by hosting an 'Imagination Station Fair' that features multimedia presentations, live performances, and student-led workshops, celebrating their innovative ideas and engaging guests in creative activities inspired by local community and technological advances. They will also participate in a 'Transformative Journey Exhibition,' where they narrate the development of their projects using storytelling techniques, guiding guests through interactive stations that illustrate the evolution of their ideas and personal growth. This dynamic exhibition invites community members to provide feedback and participate, ensuring the students’ work resonates on a broader scale and fosters community involvement.
