Purpose

This project invites 3rd-grade students to explore their identities and the influences that shape them through creative expression. Over three weeks, students will engage in hands-on activities that integrate math, literacy, and self-reflection, culminating in a personalized poster board presentation. By reenacting a wax museum, students will exhibit their understanding of personal and family stories, fostering a sense of belonging and self-awareness. This experience encourages critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning, providing students with opportunities to apply academic skills in meaningful ways.

Learning goals

Students will creatively express their identities and the influences that shape them through a hands-on project, integrating math and literacy skills. They will calculate and compare perimeters and areas in their poster designs, while identifying arithmetic patterns. Students will enhance their phonics and word analysis skills by writing descriptive narratives about their personal experiences and inspirations. Through self-directed learning, they will engage in critical reflection, receive feedback, and refine their work, culminating in a wax museum-style exhibition to communicate their stories effectively.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.D.8 - Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.D.9 - Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.C.7 - Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.A.2 - Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create a personalized poster board that visually represents their identity, including elements such as drawings, photographs, and written reflections on personal experiences and inspirations. They will prepare a short presentation to accompany their poster, explaining their choices and insights. The project will culminate in a wax museum-style exhibition, where students will embody and present as a figure who has inspired them, sharing stories and connections to their own lives.

Launch

To kick off the project, students will participate in a "Gallery Walk" where they bring a small personal item that represents something important to them. Each student will place their item on a table and write a brief description of its significance. As they walk around, they will observe their peers' items and engage in discussions, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. This activity sets the stage for exploring personal stories and inspirations, aligning with the essential questions and competencies.

Exhibition

Students will present their "All About Me" poster boards in a wax museum-style exhibition, where each student embodies a character that represents their identity and inspirations. As visitors tour the museum, students will come to life to share their personal stories, showcasing how their experiences and family narratives shape who they are. This interactive exhibition allows students to practice effective communication, engage in self-reflection, and celebrate their unique identities with peers, teachers, and family members.
