The Challenge

In today's world, the pervasive issue of noise pollution from urban environments and high-decibel activities is contributing to widespread hearing loss, affecting communication, learning, and overall quality of life. This challenge underscores the need for innovative sound management solutions to enhance community well-being and support creative endeavors.
Challenge Question
How can we design a sound stereo system that minimizes noise pollution and enhances sound quality for diverse environments, while addressing the challenges faced by students, urban residents, and local artists?
Standards
  • [XQ Math Badges] M201 Function Concepts - 201.b - Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases and using technology for more complicated cases.
Competencies
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.
  • Creative Contributer - Interprets experiences, imagines and plays with new possibilities with curiosity, and creates approaches that are novel, useful, and valued by the world around them.
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.

Learning Partners and Clients

Local cinemas and theaters can serve as valuable learning partners for this project. Students will have the opportunity to visit these venues after hours to explore and analyze their sound design systems. By engaging with professionals in these settings, students can gain insights into real-world applications of acoustics and sound management. This collaboration will help students incorporate professional techniques into their own sound stereo designs, enhancing the practical relevance of their project work.

Phase Outcomes

Phase Learning Outcome
Discover
I can identify the core challenges related to sound and its impact on our environment by engaging in hands-on activities that spark curiosity and drive my understanding of the problem.
Examine
I can investigate the causes and effects of noise pollution and hearing loss by conducting research and experiments that connect directly to real-world implications.
Engineer
I can develop a functional sound stereo design that addresses the challenges identified, using principles of acoustics and wave behavior to create an innovative solution.
Do
I can test my sound stereo design in real-world settings, gather data on its effectiveness, and refine my approach based on evidence collected.
Share
I can share my sound stereo project and personal learning journey with an authentic audience, highlighting both the technical solution and my growth throughout the process.
