The Challenge

Cities worldwide are grappling with the integration of renewable energy sources into outdated electrical grids, which hinders the transition to more sustainable power systems. This challenge is compounded in low-income communities, where energy inefficiency in aging housing exacerbates financial burdens and environmental impact.
Challenge Question
How can students design an energy-efficient home electrical system that integrates renewable energy sources, addresses the needs of low-income communities, and aligns with modern sustainability practices?
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] HS-PS2-5 - Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce a magnetic field and that a changing magnetic field can produce an electric current.
Competencies
  • Pursuing Goals - Resource management (LL.SM.2.a)

Learning Partners and Clients

Engage with local renewable energy companies, such as Holaluz, to provide students with access to professionals who can discuss the challenges and solutions related to decentralized power generation and integration into existing systems.
