Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the rich history and culture of Ancient Greece through a creative, hands-on learning experience. By designing action figures and crafting advertisement campaigns, students will deepen their understanding of historical figures and events, while honing their research, collaboration, and self-directed learning skills. This project encourages students to connect historical knowledge with modern creative expression, fostering both critical thinking and artistic innovation.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in historical research and analysis by exploring primary and secondary sources to accurately depict Ancient Greek figures. They will enhance their creativity and design thinking through the creation of action figures and advertisement campaigns, integrating historical and cultural elements. Collaboration and communication skills will be honed as students work in pairs and engage with community partners, while self-directed learning will be fostered through reflection and iterative design processes. Additionally, students will apply mathematical competencies in calculating dimensions and proportions for their action figures and packaging.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.2 - Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and create an Ancient Greece Action Figure, complete with historically accurate accessories and features that reflect their chosen figure's significance. The project will include crafting detailed packaging and an advertisement campaign that incorporates Ancient Greek art and symbolism, showcasing their understanding of the era. Each pair will produce a digital portfolio documenting their research, design iterations, and final product, along with reflections on how historical context informed their creative choices.

Launch

Begin the project with an 'Epic Storytelling Circle,' where students gather to hear captivating tales of Ancient Greek heroes, gods, and legends. This immersive experience will spark ideas for their action figures and encourage students to consider how these stories can be represented in their designs. The storytelling session will set the stage for creativity and historical exploration, inspiring students to delve into the rich tapestry of Ancient Greek culture as they embark on their project.

Exhibition

At the conclusion of the project, host an "Ancient Greece Action Figure Expo" where students display their creations in a gallery-style setup. Invite parents, community partners, and other classes to view the action figures, packaging, and advertisement campaigns. Each student pair will present their figure, explaining the historical context and design choices, and engage with visitors through interactive Q&A sessions. This exhibition will celebrate students' creativity and historical understanding, providing a platform for them to share their learning journey.
