Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to critically analyze and challenge oppressive narratives within their communities. Through hands-on projects and collaboration with the San Diego History Center, students will explore the historical and contemporary contexts of oppression, develop advocacy plans, and engage in creative expression to foster awareness and action. This experience aims to deepen students' understanding of social justice issues, enhance their critical thinking abilities, and encourage active participation in societal change.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to critically analyze and challenge oppressive narratives by investigating local community issues related to race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. They will enhance their storytelling skills to effectively communicate diverse perspectives and foster social change. Students will engage in collaborative projects that connect historical context with contemporary issues, promoting active participation in community advocacy. Through reflection and creative expression, students will articulate their personal learning journeys and contribute to a collective understanding of oppression and resistance.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a graffiti wall that visually represents the themes of oppression and resistance, integrating elements from each student's personal learning journey. They will also develop public service announcements that address specific stereotypes and forms of oppression, which will be distributed within their school community. Additionally, students will produce multimedia reflection pieces that document their understanding and advocacy efforts, to be shared at the school and the San Diego History Center.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Storytelling for Justice Day' where students participate in interactive workshops focused on crafting compelling narratives that challenge stereotypes. Invite local activists and community leaders to share their stories and insights, providing students with diverse perspectives and real-world examples of advocacy. Conclude the day with a storytelling session where students present their own narratives, highlighting the voices and experiences of marginalized communities.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Community Advocacy Fair' where students set up booths to showcase their empowerment plans and engage visitors in interactive activities that promote awareness and action on issues of oppression. Each booth will feature multimedia presentations, interactive displays, and student-led discussions that highlight their research and proposed solutions. Invite community members, local organizations, and the San Diego History Center to participate, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing knowledge and inspiring change.
