Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage young learners in a dynamic exploration of the alphabet through the lens of earth and space sciences. By integrating creative expression with scientific inquiry, students will develop a deeper understanding of their environment and the universe. This project fosters self-directed learning, critical thinking, and a strong sense of identity as students creatively represent letters using natural materials and space themes. Through hands-on activities and collaborative exploration, students will cultivate a sense of belonging and curiosity about the world around them.

Learning goals

Students will explore and creatively express the alphabet using natural and environmental objects, linking each letter to elements of earth and space. They will develop skills in geographic awareness by identifying and using maps and globes to understand cultural and environmental characteristics. Through self-directed learning, students will engage in self-reflection and utilize feedback to guide their learning journey. They will also cultivate an academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging, and enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills by approaching complex questions with innovative solutions.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] ESS.1.B - Earth and the Solar System
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] ESS.1.A - The Universe and Its Stars
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D2.Geo.3.K-2 - Use maps, globes, and other simple geographic models to identify cultural and environmental characteristics of places.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a 3D alphabet book, with each page featuring a letter crafted from natural materials collected during outdoor exploration. Each letter will be paired with a model of a space or earth element that corresponds to the letter, such as 'M' for mountain or 'S' for star. These creations will culminate in a 'Galactic Gallery Walk,' where students will present their books and models to parents and peers, showcasing their understanding and creativity.

Launch

Kick off the project with an immersive 'Space Day' where the classroom transforms into a mini planetarium. Begin with a captivating story about a journey through the solar system, highlighting the ABCs of space. Engage students in an interactive activity where they use Google Earth to explore different landforms and identify their initials from a satellite view. Conclude the launch by introducing the 'Galactic Alphabet Hunt', setting the stage for students to discover and connect letters with space elements throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Galactic Gallery Walk' where they showcase their 3D alphabet books and models. Each student will present their creative representations of the ABCs and corresponding space or earth elements to parents and peers. The classroom will transform into an interactive space where visitors can explore each student's work, ask questions, and engage with the imaginative connections made between letters and the wonders of our universe.
