Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to inspire students to become active participants in their communities by drawing connections between Malala Yousafzai's activism and their own lives. Students will engage in hands-on projects that encourage them to identify and address local educational challenges, fostering skills in communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Through research, peer feedback, and community engagement, students will develop a deeper understanding of global education issues and the power of storytelling in social change.

Learning goals

Students will explore the themes of courage and advocacy by delving into Malala's story and applying these concepts to identify and address educational challenges in their community. They will develop skills in effective communication by engaging with diverse audiences, including peers and community partners, through presentations and discussions. Students will also cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by designing and implementing a community project, participating in peer critiques, and reflecting on their learning journey.
Competencies
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.
  • Effective Communicator - Engages diverse audiences respectfully by exchanging ideas and information responsibly, listening actively, speaking and writing clearly, and using print and digital media appropriately.

Products

Students will develop a multimedia presentation that captures the essence of courage and advocacy found in 'I Am Malala,' integrating video, images, and text to narrate their personal stories of standing up for important causes. They will also design and execute a small community project or campaign, documented through a series of reflective journals and visual media, showcasing the process and impact. Finally, students will contribute to a 'Global Education Fair' by presenting their research on cultural perspectives of education, using creative displays and interactive elements to engage peers and community members.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Change Makers Lab' where students gather to brainstorm and design a community project inspired by Malala's activism. Begin with an engaging storytelling session about Malala's journey, followed by a collaborative workshop where students identify local educational challenges. Encourage students to propose practical solutions, fostering an atmosphere of creativity and purpose.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Global Education Fair' where they present their multimedia projects and research on cultural perspectives of education. Each student will have a booth to display their work, engage visitors in discussions, and answer questions about their community projects and the impact of Malala's story. Community members, peers, and family will be invited to explore the diverse exhibits, encouraging a dialogue on global educational challenges and personal advocacy.
