Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse high school students in authentic, real-world Spanish language experiences that deepen their understanding of cultural nuances and enhance their communication skills. Through engaging interactions with community partners, students will develop personal profiles and cultural insights, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. This hands-on approach encourages self-directed learning, critical reflection, and collaborative problem-solving, allowing students to explore and present their unique perspectives in a bilingual context.

Learning goals

Students will develop their ability to communicate personal information in Spanish, focusing on the correct use of subject pronouns and the verbs 'ser' and 'estar'. They will deepen their understanding of cultural nuances in introductions across Spanish-speaking countries, comparing these with their own cultural practices. Through collaboration with community partners, students will enhance their conversational skills and cultural awareness, while critically reflecting on their identity and belonging. By engaging in multimedia projects, students will refine their language proficiency and presentation skills, culminating in a public showcase of their bilingual personal profiles and cultural insights.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a bilingual digital magazine showcasing their personal profiles, cultural insights, and reflections. They will also produce video diaries capturing their language progress and cultural exploration, which will be compiled into a virtual gallery. Additionally, students will develop multimedia presentations and perform skits that highlight their understanding of Spanish introductions and cultural exchanges, culminating in a cultural showcase event.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Global Pen-Pal Party,' where students connect virtually with their college pen-pals for the first time. Engage in icebreaker activities and share initial introductions in Spanish, setting the stage for cultural exchange and language practice. This interactive start will foster excitement and establish meaningful connections that will be built upon throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host an interactive exhibition day where they set up booths representing different Spanish-speaking countries. Each booth will offer cultural insights, personal introductions, and interactive activities for visitors to experience. Community members and parents will be invited to engage with the students' work, fostering a vibrant celebration of language skills and cultural understanding.
