Purpose

In this project, students will explore what it means to be active and responsible members of their school community by engaging in collaborative activities that highlight leadership and advocacy. Through hands-on experiences, they will develop skills in self-directed learning and critical thinking, while fostering a sense of identity and belonging. The project encourages students to create and implement team norms, address biases, and build relationships with diverse peers, ultimately leading to meaningful participation and contribution within their school environment.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in self- and peer-advocacy by identifying and addressing biases within their school community. They will collaborate to establish team norms and equitable workloads, fostering efficiency and inclusivity. Through self-directed learning, students will reflect on their roles within the community, enhancing their sense of identity and belonging. They will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving to create innovative solutions that encourage active participation and responsibility among peers.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and implement a "Leadership Day" event for their school community. This event will feature student-led workshops and activities that promote inclusivity, teamwork, and peer advocacy. Throughout the project, students will create informational posters, digital presentations, and a reflection journal to document their learning journey and insights on leadership and community engagement.

Launch

Begin with a school-wide survey where students identify key areas for improvement in school community participation. Next, facilitate a group discussion where students share their thoughts on what it means to be responsible members of the school community. Conclude the launch with a collaborative brainstorming session to generate ideas for projects that address these areas, encouraging students to consider diverse perspectives and innovative solutions.

Exhibition

Students will create a "Leadership Fair" where they present their projects on responsible community membership. Each group will design a booth showcasing their ideas and strategies for encouraging participation, using multimedia presentations, interactive activities, and visual displays. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to explore the fair, engage with the students' work, and provide feedback, fostering a sense of belonging and community involvement.
