Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on project to design and build a model playground, focusing on safety and fun for all. Through collaboration with community partners, including 2nd graders, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This project encourages self-directed learning and academic mindset by fostering a sense of belonging and identity. Students will reflect on their learning journey, enhance their writing skills, and present their findings to the class, culminating in a comprehensive written piece.

Learning goals

Students will develop their writing skills by composing complete sentences and organizing ideas with clear examples, culminating in a one to two-page piece with a structured introduction, middle, and conclusion. They will engage in self-directed learning through reflection and feedback from peers and teachers, enhancing their ability to monitor and direct their learning process. Students will cultivate an academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging, contributing to their self-efficacy. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, they will explore innovative approaches to designing a model playground that is fun and safe, addressing an authentic community need.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.5 - Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.3.K-2 - Present a summary of an argument using print, oral, and digital technologies.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.5 - Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a model playground using various materials, ensuring it is both fun and safe. Throughout the project, they will produce detailed sketches, safety guidelines, and written reflections on their design choices. The final product will be a comprehensive presentation showcasing their model playground, complete with digital media elements to illustrate their findings and reasoning. This presentation will be shared with the class and community partners, highlighting their learning journey and the importance of safety and creativity in playground design.

Launch

Begin the project by inviting a local playground designer or safety expert to speak with the class about the importance of playground design and safety. Follow this with a hands-on activity where students explore and assess the current playground, identifying areas for improvement. Encourage students to brainstorm initial ideas for their model playground, focusing on safety and fun, and share their thoughts with peers. This sets the stage for a collaborative and reflective learning journey, emphasizing the growth mindset and the importance of community input.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Playground Safety Fair" for their class, where they will present their model playground designs. Each group will showcase their work through digital presentations, including visual models and interactive elements, to highlight safety features and fun aspects. They will engage in discussions with peers, teachers, and community partners, such as local playground designers or safety officers, to receive feedback and answer questions. This exhibition will allow students to demonstrate their learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while fostering a sense of community and belonging.
