Purpose

This project aims to foster a sense of community and belonging among students by celebrating their diverse backgrounds and interests. Through hands-on activities like creating a 'Community Quilt' and a collaborative mural, students will explore and express their identities while developing communication and collaboration skills. By engaging with local artists and participating in a community art exhibit, students will connect with their surroundings, promoting inclusivity and mutual respect.

Learning goals

Students will enhance their communication skills by engaging in collaborative discussions and group work while planning and creating their contributions to the mural project. They will develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse backgrounds and interests within their community through hands-on art projects. Additionally, students will practice self-reflection and critical thinking as they document their thoughts in a reflection journal, identifying personal growth and areas for improvement.

Products

Students will create a 'Community Quilt' composed of individual fabric squares that reflect their diverse identities, culminating in a unified piece symbolizing belonging. Additionally, they will contribute to a collaborative mural project, each student designing a section that represents their personal journey and growth. These projects will be displayed in a community art exhibit, showcasing the collective creativity and diversity of the students. Throughout the process, students will maintain a 'Reflection Journal,' documenting their experiences and insights, which will serve as a personal record of their learning and development.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "Cultural Storytelling Circle" where students and community members share stories, traditions, or artifacts that represent their cultural backgrounds. This interactive session will set the stage for understanding and appreciating the diverse identities within the classroom. Following the storytelling, students will brainstorm ideas for their 'Community Quilt' squares, drawing inspiration from the stories shared.

Exhibition

Students will present their 'Community Quilt' and collaborative mural at a community exhibition event attended by parents, peers, and community members. The event will feature guided tours led by students, where they explain the meaning behind their quilt squares and mural contributions, fostering dialogue about diversity and belonging. Local artists and community partners will join the celebration, offering workshops and discussions to further engage attendees in the themes of identity and unity.
