By crafting informative articles and collaborating with peers, students will gain a deeper understanding of their community while honing their ability to analyze and present information effectively.

Learning goals

Students will learn to identify and evaluate credible sources, enhancing their research skills and critical thinking. They will develop the ability to write clear and accurate informative texts, effectively organizing and analyzing content. Through engaging with their community, students will practice critical dialogue, using evidence to support their findings and articulate their perspectives. The project will also foster collaboration and constructive feedback, as students refine their work through peer review and reflection.

Products

Students will create a digital magazine showcasing their investigative journalism work, which includes well-researched articles, interviews, and infographics on their chosen topics. Throughout the project, students will engage in peer review sessions to refine their articles, ensuring clarity and evidence-based reporting. The final magazine will be shared online with the school community and local organizations, providing students with an authentic platform to present their findings and insights.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "Local Newsroom Day," where students visit a local newspaper or news station, either in person or virtually, to observe journalists at work and learn about the investigative process firsthand. Invite a journalist to speak about their experiences and answer student questions, providing real-world context and inspiration. Conclude the day with a brainstorming session where students discuss potential local issues they are passionate about, setting the stage for their investigative journey.

Exhibition

Host a Community Journalism Night where students present their digital magazine to an audience of peers, teachers, family members, and local community leaders. Set up interactive stations where students can showcase their articles, conduct live readings, and engage in Q&A sessions about their investigative process and findings. Encourage attendees to provide feedback and share their perspectives on the topics covered, fostering a dialogue between students and the community.
