Purpose

This project empowers 7th-grade students to actively engage in their community by addressing local water conservation issues with a global perspective. Through collaborative teamwork, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, students will design actionable solutions, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. By presenting their findings to local and international audiences, they will develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of local actions and global impacts, enhancing their academic mindset and problem-solving skills.

Learning goals

Students will collaborate to identify and address local environmental issues, specifically focusing on water conservation, and develop strategies that can influence global awareness. They will engage in self-directed learning, utilizing feedback and reflection to adapt their approaches and enhance their understanding of community impact. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, students will explore innovative solutions and present their projects to both local and international audiences, fostering a sense of identity and belonging within a global context.
Standards

  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D4.7.6-8 - Assess their individual and collective capacities to take action to address local, regional, and global problems, taking into account a range of possible levers of power, strategies, and potential outcomes.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive water conservation project that includes a detailed assessment of local water usage, innovative strategies to reduce consumption, and a compelling presentation of their findings. They will pitch their solutions to local government officials and document their journey through a digital story or video to share with international environmental groups. Throughout the project, students will maintain a reflection journal that captures their learning process, challenges, and insights, which will be shared with peers for collaborative feedback and growth.

Launch

Kick off the 'Ripple Effect Challenge' with an interactive workshop where students explore real-world case studies of local initiatives that had global impacts. Facilitate a brainstorming session where students identify pressing local issues related to water conservation. Guide them to form teams and develop initial project ideas, encouraging them to think creatively about how their solutions could extend beyond their community. Conclude the launch with a mini-pitch session, where teams present their project concepts and receive constructive feedback from peers.

Exhibition

Host a community water conservation fair where students present their projects through interactive exhibits and demonstrations, inviting local government officials, environmental experts, and community members to engage with their findings. Encourage students to create visual displays, digital presentations, and hands-on activities that showcase their innovative solutions. Facilitate a panel discussion where students can discuss the potential global impact of their local initiatives and receive feedback from the audience.
