The Challenge

Pollinators in NYC are facing habitat fragmentation due to urban sprawl and lack of green corridors, threatening their role in maintaining biodiversity. This challenge impacts the ecological balance and the city's ability to support diverse species interactions. How can we use art and science to create an awareness campaign that highlights the role of pollinators in maintaining biodiversity and inspires action in our city?
Challenge Question
How can we use art and science to create an awareness campaign that highlights the role of pollinators in maintaining biodiversity and inspires action in our city?
Standards
  • [New York] 5.ME.DCI.LS2.A - LS2.A: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems
  • [New York] 3.IVT.DCI.LS1.B - LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms
  • [New York] 5.LS2.1 - Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants (producers), animals (consumers), decomposers, and the environment.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Phase Outcomes

Phase Learning Outcome
Discover
I can identify the challenge of pollinator habitat fragmentation in NYC and understand its root causes through hands-on activities and discussions that spark curiosity and engagement.
Examine
I can research the interdependent relationships between plants and pollinators by conducting investigations and observing diverse habitats, which helps me understand the importance of biodiversity.
Engineer
I can develop a model that illustrates how plants and pollinators depend on each other, using creative design techniques to propose solutions that support pollinator pathways in urban environments.
Do
I can implement my solution by creating pollinator-friendly spaces, collecting data on plant growth and pollinator visits, and testing the effectiveness of my design in real-world settings.
Share
I can share my project and personal growth journey with an authentic audience, using interactive presentations to highlight the role of pollinators in biodiversity and inspire community action.
