Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage third-grade students in a hands-on exploration of the library's online catalog, fostering their ability to independently locate and select books that align with their interests. Through collaborative activities and guided support from librarians, students will develop critical thinking and digital literacy skills, enhancing their confidence in navigating information resources. This project-based approach encourages students to build meaningful connections with peers and community partners while deepening their understanding of personal reading preferences and research strategies.

Learning goals

Products

Students will create a 'Book Discovery Map' that visually represents their exploration of the online catalog, highlighting the books they found and their reflections on each. They will also produce a 'Reading Relay' recommendation list, where each student contributes a book suggestion, forming a class-wide chain of interests. Additionally, students will prepare presentations for the 'Book Buddies Celebration,' where they will share their book discoveries and reading experiences with younger students.

Launch

Introduce the 'Reading Relay' by gathering students in a circle and explaining how they will explore the library's online catalog to find books that interest them. Encourage each student to select a book and write a brief recommendation on a card. As they pass their card to a classmate, they will create a chain of book recommendations, sparking curiosity and fostering a connection through shared interests. This activity sets the stage for collaborative exploration and discovery, engaging students from the start.

Exhibition

Host a 'Book Buddies Celebration' where students partner with younger classes to share their book discoveries. Each student will read excerpts aloud and explain how they navigated the online catalog to find books that interest them. This event will allow students to showcase their 'Book Discovery Map' and discuss their learning journey, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community connection.
