Purpose

This project invites students to explore the world of architecture by engaging with the styles of famous architects and applying these styles to design a new addition for East Technical High School. Through this hands-on, creative process, students will develop an understanding of architectural concepts and vocabulary, while also considering how design influences perception and functionality of spaces. By collaborating with community partners such as the ACE Mentor program, students will gain real-world insights and feedback, enhancing their learning experience. The project culminates in a Gallery Walk exhibition, where students present their designs and reflect on how their ideas could transform the school environment.

Learning goals

Students will explore and understand the role of architects by studying famous figures in the field and their distinctive styles. They will apply this knowledge to design an addition to East Technical High School, incorporating architectural vocabulary and concepts. Through collaboration with ACE Mentor program partners, students will refine their designs, preparing them for a Gallery Walk exhibition. This project aims to deepen students' appreciation of architecture and its impact on their environment, encouraging them to reflect on how design influences perception and community identity.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 1 - Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 5 - Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.

Products

Students will create a scale model of their proposed addition to East Technical High School, reflecting the style of their chosen architect. They will also develop a digital presentation that includes sketches, architectural vocabulary, and a narrative explaining their design choices. The final product will be showcased in a Gallery Walk, where students will present their models and digital presentations to peers, teachers, and community partners from the ACE Mentor program.

Launch

Begin the project by introducing students to a variety of famous architects through an interactive virtual tour of iconic buildings. Facilitate a discussion on the unique styles and techniques used by these architects, encouraging students to share their initial thoughts and preferences. Invite an ACE Mentor program partner to speak about the role of architects and the impact of architectural design on communities. This launch activity will set the stage for students to explore, select, and immerse themselves in the architectural style of their chosen architect for their project.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a Gallery Walk where they will present their architectural models and designs inspired by their chosen architect. Each student group will set up a display that includes their model, design sketches, and a brief presentation explaining the architectural style they emulated and the vocabulary they incorporated. Community partners from the ACE Mentor program will be invited to provide feedback and engage with students, offering real-world insights into architectural design. This exhibition will allow students to share their creative process and reflect on how their redesigns might alter perceptions of East Tech High School.
