Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage Kindergarten students in exploring and understanding how their bodies move through interactive, hands-on activities. By using iPads to capture and analyze their movements, students will develop observational and critical thinking skills, while fostering a sense of self-awareness and identity. Through collaborative projects and public presentations, students will build confidence in sharing their learning with peers and older students, enhancing their communication and social skills.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project-based experience are to help Kindergarten students understand how different parts of their body contribute to movement. Students will develop skills in using digital tools to capture and analyze movements, fostering self-directed learning through reflection and feedback. They will engage in critical thinking by exploring various movement sequences, and enhance their academic mindset by sharing their work with peers and older students, establishing a sense of identity and belonging.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will create a movement journal by capturing and annotating photos of themselves performing various movements. They will also collaboratively design a movement mural, arranging printed photos to depict a sequence of actions. By the end of the project, students will present their work in a 'Movement Museum,' showcasing their annotated photos and acting as docents to explain their learning to Year 2 students.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Body in Motion' scavenger hunt, where students explore different interactive stations around the classroom. Each station demonstrates a unique movement, such as hopping, spinning, or stretching. Students use their iPads to capture photos of themselves performing these movements, sparking curiosity and excitement about how their bodies move. This experience sets the stage for the project by encouraging exploration and observation, laying the groundwork for deeper inquiry into the essential question.

Exhibition

Kindergarten students will host a 'Movement Museum' in their classroom, showcasing their annotated movement photos. They will invite Year 2 students to tour the exhibit, with Kindergarteners serving as docents to explain how different body parts contribute to various movements. This interactive exhibition allows students to share their learning and engage with an authentic audience, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment in their work.
