Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in exploring the transformative role of biotechnology in addressing real-world environmental challenges. By investigating DNA structure, function, and biotechnological techniques, students will design and conduct experiments to tackle a local environmental issue. This project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and a strong academic mindset, as students collaboratively develop innovative solutions and present their findings in a science exhibition. Through this hands-on approach, students will deepen their understanding of biotechnology's impact on society and their own potential to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Learning goals

Students will explore the structure and function of DNA, the Central Dogma, and biotechnology techniques such as Gel Electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA transformation. They will apply this knowledge to design and conduct an experiment addressing a local environmental issue, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Throughout the project, students will engage in self-directed learning by utilizing feedback and self-reflection, while also developing an academic mindset that enhances their sense of identity and belonging. The project will culminate in a science exhibition where students present their findings, demonstrating their ability to synthesize information and communicate effectively.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and conduct an experiment addressing a local environmental issue through biotechnology, such as improving soil health or reducing plastic waste. They will create a digital presentation showcasing their experimental process and findings, incorporating visuals like graphs and models. The final product will be presented at a science exhibition, where students will engage with peers and teachers, receiving feedback to refine their work and deepen their understanding.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a hands-on DNA extraction activity using simple materials like strawberries and dish soap. This engaging experiment will introduce students to the concept of DNA, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for deeper exploration into biotechnology. Following the extraction, facilitate a class discussion to connect the activity to the essential question, encouraging students to brainstorm local environmental issues that biotechnology could address.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Biotech Solutions Fair" where they present their experimental designs addressing local environmental issues. They will create interactive displays demonstrating their understanding of DNA structure, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA transformation. Attendees, including peers and teachers, will engage with the students' projects, providing feedback and participating in discussions about the potential real-world impact of their solutions. This exhibition will also include a reflection corner where students can share their learning journey, challenges faced, and how they applied critical thinking to solve problems.
