Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in the art of narrative writing through immersive, hands-on activities that foster creativity and critical thinking. By exploring the hero's journey, crafting dialogue, and analyzing narrative structures, students will develop the skills to create compelling stories. This project encourages self-directed learning and reflective practices, allowing students to connect with their narratives on a personal level while enhancing their storytelling abilities. Through collaborative assessments and a storytelling showcase, students will gain confidence in their writing and deepen their understanding of narrative techniques.

Learning goals

Students will craft narratives that effectively incorporate the hero's journey framework, develop authentic and relatable characters, and utilize dialogue to enhance storytelling and reveal character traits. They will analyze various narrative structures and apply parts of speech to create vivid descriptions, enriching their narratives. Through brainstorming techniques, students will generate original story ideas, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, they will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on their writing process and utilizing peer feedback to refine their work.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cr1.HS1.c - Use script analysis to generate ideas about a character that is believable and authentic in a drama/theatre work.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.3 - Analyze the impact of the author's choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a visual storyboard or map to outline their narrative's hero's journey, character development, and plot structure. They will write a two-page, single-spaced short story showcasing their narrative skills, including dialogue and descriptive language. Additionally, students will maintain a reflective journal documenting their brainstorming and creative processes. The culmination of their work will be presented at a 'Storytelling Café' event, where they will perform live readings and engage with feedback from peers and guests.

Launch

To kick off the narrative writing project, initiate a 'Character Creation Lab' where students design avatars or models of their story characters using art supplies or digital tools. Focus on detailing traits and roles within the hero's journey, allowing students to visualize and connect with their narratives. This hands-on activity will spark creativity and set the stage for developing compelling characters in their stories.

Exhibition

Host a 'Storytelling Café' event where students perform live readings of their narratives in a relaxed, café-style setting, with classmates and invited guests providing feedback and discussing the use of dialogue and character development over coffee and snacks.
