Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage students in authentic journalism practices that empower them to explore and address significant issues within their school community. Through the creation of a multimedia school news website, students will develop critical skills in researching, writing, and using technology to communicate effectively. This hands-on experience will enhance their ability to influence public policy and engage in civic discourse, fostering a deeper understanding of their role in shaping school and community narratives.

Learning goals

Students will learn to effectively use technology to produce and publish dynamic multimedia content, meeting specific writing standards. They will develop skills in researching, evaluating credible sources, and crafting compelling narratives that address significant school community issues. Through collaborative roles in a newsroom simulation, students will strengthen their writing, editing, and design skills while understanding public policy and the influence of journalism on government and politics. Additionally, students will build self-advocacy skills by identifying allies and engaging with their audience through interactive features on the news website.

  • Governments - Public policy (FK.SS.1.c)
  • Politics - Influencing government (FK.SS.2.a)

Products

Students will create a dynamic multimedia school news website featuring written articles, podcasts, and videos covering school events and issues. They will incorporate interactive features such as polls and comment sections to engage the school community. Each student will compile a digital portfolio showcasing their contributions, including drafts, revisions, and final pieces, alongside personal reflections on their development as writers and journalists.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive 'Newsroom Simulation Day' where students assume roles as reporters, editors, and designers. They will work collaboratively to produce a mock newspaper edition under a tight deadline, simulating the fast-paced environment of a real newsroom. This immersive experience will set the stage for the project, fostering teamwork and introducing students to the various aspects of journalism and media production.

Exhibition

Host a "School News Showcase" event where students present their multimedia news website to peers, teachers, and community members. Set up interactive stations where attendees can explore articles, listen to podcasts, and watch videos created by the students. Include live demonstrations of the website's interactive features, such as polls and comment sections, and invite feedback from the audience. Encourage students to discuss their research process, writing challenges, and insights gained from the project. Conclude with a Q&A session, allowing students to engage with the audience and reflect on their learning journey.
