The purpose of this project is to cultivate students' roles as active stewards of their local environment by engaging them in hands-on, community-based conservation efforts. Through interactive learning experiences, students will develop a deeper understanding of ecosystem dynamics, biogeology, and natural resources, while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This project aims to foster a sense of place and belonging, encouraging students to reflect on their impact and responsibility towards maintaining a healthy and sustainable neighborhood park.
Learning goals
Students will explore ecosystem dynamics by engaging in hands-on activities that demonstrate the importance of conservation and natural resource management. They will develop self-directed learning skills by setting personal goals for their contributions to the park clean-up and reflecting on their progress. Through collaboration with community partners, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by designing and implementing a conservation initiative. They will cultivate an academic mindset by connecting their learning to real-world contexts, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility towards their local environment.
Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
Products
Throughout the project, students will create a 'Nature Documentary' video that captures their park clean-up efforts, interviews with park rangers, and their personal reflections on conservation. Additionally, they will design a 'Park Stewardship Plan' outlining steps to enhance the park's ecosystem, which will be shared during the Stewardship Celebration Picnic. These products will showcase students' learning and contributions to maintaining a healthy park environment.
Launch
Kick off the learning experience with a 'Park Ranger Training Day' where students rotate through interactive stations led by actual park rangers. Activities include animal tracking, plant identification, and hands-on conservation techniques. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and excitement, setting the stage for their role as young stewards of nature.
Exhibition
Students will host a 'Stewardship Celebration Picnic' at the local park, inviting families and community members to join in a zero-waste picnic. During the event, students will showcase their 'Nature Documentary' video and share their experiences through storytelling and creative displays. They will present their conservation initiatives and the impact of their projects on the park's ecosystem, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for maintaining a healthy environment.
