Purpose

Students will delve into the captivating life stories of soccer players, discovering how these narratives can motivate overcoming obstacles and fostering community. Through interactive, project-based activities, students will hone narrative expression skills, engage in self-directed learning, and collaborate effectively. This unit is designed to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and empathy, encouraging students to craft and share their own narratives that connect the athletes' journeys to their personal development and community contributions.

Learning goals

Students will delve into narrative storytelling by researching and crafting engaging soccer player biographies, emphasizing themes of resilience and community-building. They will hone skills in narrative expression, self-directed learning, and relationship-building through collaborative discussions and peer feedback. Products

Students will develop a series of narrative drafts, engaging in peer and teacher feedback sessions to refine their storytelling techniques. The final product will be a compelling narrative about a chosen soccer player, showcasing the player's personal challenges and achievements, and incorporating textual evidence and narrative techniques. Students will choose their preferred format for their narrative, such as a multimedia presentation, photo essay, written essay, poem, or song, and share their work with other students to inspire and build community.

Launch

Kick off the unit with an interactive "Soccer Stories Gallery Walk," where students engage with multimedia displays of famous soccer players' biographies at various stations. Each station will feature videos, images, and narratives showcasing pivotal moments and challenges from the players' lives. Following the walk, host a group discussion where students discuss which stories impacted them and the reasons behind their choices, laying the groundwork for their narrative exploration. This engaging activity will ignite curiosity and offer a foundation for appreciating the power of personal stories in soccer.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Soccer Stories Showcase" where they present their narratives to peers, teachers, and family members. Each student will choose a format—such as a multimedia presentation, photo essay, or poem—to creatively convey the story of their chosen soccer player. The exhibition will include interactive stations where attendees can engage in discussions, provide feedback, and explore how these stories inspire personal growth and community building. This event will also feature a gallery walk, allowing students to share their reflections on the process and the lessons learned from their peers' work.
