Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the real-world processes of gardening and healthy eating, fostering an understanding of what plants and animals need to survive. Through hands-on activities and community engagement, students will explore the connections between plant growth, nutrition, and human survival, while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This experience aims to cultivate a sense of place and belonging, encouraging students to reflect on their roles within their communities and the importance of sustainable practices.

Learning goals

Students will explore the essential needs for plant and animal survival, focusing on patterns and observations in gardening. They will develop skills in classifying and categorizing vegetables, understanding their nutritional benefits and contribution to human survival. Through hands-on gardening and cooking activities, students will engage in self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while establishing a sense of identity and belonging within their community.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will cultivate a garden and harvest a variety of vegetables. They will collaboratively create a class cookbook featuring recipes that utilize these garden vegetables, accompanied by reflections on their nutritional benefits. By the end of the project, students will present multimedia projects showcasing plant growth and cooking demonstrations at the 'Garden to Table Showcase' and 'Plant & Plate Expo.'

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Healthy Harvest Festival,' where students rotate through interactive stations. They will taste-test various vegetables, learn about different food groups, and participate in a cooking challenge using produce from the garden. This engaging event will spark curiosity and excitement about the journey from seed to plate, setting the stage for the project.

Exhibition

Students will organize a 'Garden to Table Showcase' where they present multimedia projects on plant growth and host cooking demonstrations using vegetables harvested from their garden. They will set up booths for a 'Plant & Plate Expo,' demonstrating cooking techniques and discussing the importance of healthy eating with visitors. Community partners will be invited to share insights on sustainable gardening, making the exhibition a comprehensive celebration of learning and collaboration.
