The project encourages students to engage in self-directed learning, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving while building a sense of identity and belonging through shared experiences and community interactions.

Learning goals

Students will explore the cultural and historical significance of sushi, understanding its evolution and regional variations in Japan. They will engage in hands-on activities to learn the science behind sushi-making, while developing research skills through reading non-fiction texts and creating digital presentations. The project aims to foster critical thinking by examining geographical influences on sushi and encourages self-directed learning through reflection and feedback.

Products

Students will create a sushi recipe book, illustrating different types of sushi from various Japanese regions, complete with fun facts. They will host a 'Sushi Tasting Day,' preparing simple sushi rolls for classmates and family to taste and learn about sushi varieties. Additionally, students will develop a digital presentation or interactive map showcasing sushi's journey from its origins to global popularity, incorporating multimedia elements like videos and images.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Virtual Sushi Tour' where students embark on a live virtual exploration of Japan, focusing on regions renowned for sushi. Following the tour, engage students in a hands-on activity to create a map of Japan, pinpointing these sushi-rich areas. Encourage students to present their findings using digital tools, fostering excitement and curiosity about the cultural and geographical aspects of sushi.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host a 'Sushi Tasting Day' exhibition, where they showcase their sushi recipe books and digital presentations to classmates and family. Students will prepare simple sushi rolls using safe, age-appropriate ingredients, allowing guests to taste and learn about the different types of sushi. The exhibition will include interactive stations featuring the students' maps and timelines, providing a comprehensive view of sushi's cultural and geographical journey.
