Purpose

The purpose of "Sabores del mundo hispano" is to immerse students in the rich cultural tapestry of Spanish-speaking countries through the lens of cuisine, fostering language acquisition and cultural appreciation. Students will actively engage with authentic cooking experiences and community interactions, enhancing their Spanish language skills while deepening their understanding of cultural traditions and values. By producing a video presentation and sharing their culinary creations, students will connect language with culture, embracing diverse perspectives and building a sense of belonging within the global community.

Learning goals

Students will explore the cultural traditions, geography, and history of a Spanish-speaking country, developing a deeper understanding of how language carries culture. They will acquire and apply cooking vocabulary, imperatives, and indirect object pronouns in authentic contexts, enhancing their Spanish language proficiency. Through hands-on cooking workshops and video presentations, students will engage in critical reflection and action, fostering self-directed learning and a sense of identity and belonging. Products

Students will produce a short video presentation in Spanish, showcasing the preparation of a traditional dish from their chosen Spanish-speaking country while sharing cultural insights. They will also recreate the dish at school for a communal tasting event, inviting Spanish-speaking guests to join and engage in cultural discussions. Additionally, students will maintain a 'Cultural Reflection Journal' throughout the project, documenting their learning journey, vocabulary acquisition, and personal growth, which they will share with peers during reflection sessions.

Launch

To kick off the "Sabores del Mundo Hispano" project, organize a vibrant 'Cultural Storytelling Circle' where students share personal experiences or stories related to Spanish-speaking countries. Encourage them to brainstorm foods they know from these regions and discuss the question, "How does language carry culture?" This interactive session sets the stage for exploring cultural traditions and culinary arts, fostering curiosity and engagement from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Sabores del Mundo Hispano Fiesta,' where they recreate their chosen dishes and set up tasting stations. Family, friends, and community members are invited to taste the dishes, watch the video presentations, and engage in cultural discussions. Students will present their dishes in Spanish to Spanish-speaking guests, fostering a real cultural exchange and celebration of their learning journey.
