Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in Middle Eastern history from the Ottoman Empire to the present through a multidisciplinary exploration of political, religious, and cultural dynamics. By engaging in hands-on artistic creation, students will critically examine how art reflects and shapes historical narratives and cultural identities. The project encourages students to develop a nuanced understanding of the Middle East, fostering dialogue and empathy through art as a medium for bridging cultural divides.

Learning goals

Students will critically analyze the historical trajectory of the Middle East from the Ottoman Empire to the present, focusing on the interplay between political, religious, and cultural elements. They will explore how art serves as a reflection and catalyst for understanding cultural identities and historical narratives. Through collaborative projects and discussions, students will develop skills in interpreting and creating art that bridges cultural divides and fosters dialogue. They will also cultivate an appreciation for diverse perspectives and the role of art in shaping and understanding historical contexts.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a group mosaic project that illustrates the historical narrative of the Middle East and connects it to the question of how the past impacts the present. They will also produce a theatrical performance integrating traditional Middle Eastern music, dance, and storytelling with contemporary interpretations to highlight art's role in cultural dialogue. Additionally, the class will organize an art exhibition showcasing student-created works inspired by Middle Eastern literature, visual arts, and music, accompanied by written reflections addressing the essential questions. Finally, students will participate in a collaborative mural project that visually narrates the region's story from the Ottoman Empire to the present, using symbols and motifs from Middle Eastern art.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Middle Eastern Art and Cuisine Festival,' where students can immerse themselves in the region's rich cultural tapestry. Set up interactive art stations that allow students to explore key historical events and cultural traditions through hands-on activities. Encourage students to sample traditional Middle Eastern foods, fostering a sensory connection to the culture and prompting reflection on the interplay between art, history, and cultural identity.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their artistic projects in a dynamic exhibition that features a collaborative mural, group mosaic, and theatrical performance, highlighting the historical narrative of the Middle East. The exhibition will include interactive stations where attendees can engage with the art pieces, listen to traditional Middle Eastern music, and participate in discussions about the cultural and historical contexts depicted. A seminar-style presentation will allow students to articulate their learning journey, emphasizing the role of art in understanding and bridging cultural divides.
