Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a dynamic exploration of algebraic concepts through real-world sports applications. By collaborating with local athletes and community partners, students will apply algebraic equations to analyze and predict sports outcomes, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This hands-on, project-based approach aims to deepen students' understanding of algebra while enhancing their self-directed learning and academic mindset.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to create and solve algebraic equations related to real-world sports scenarios, enhancing their understanding of speed, distance, and time. They will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on their progress and setting personal goals. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will apply critical thinking to analyze sports data and present their findings in creative and meaningful ways.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.HS.A.12 - Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems.
  • [Kentucky] AD1 - Perform basic and higher-level math operations, e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, units of conversion, averaging, percentage, proportion, ratios, numbering systems
  • [Kentucky] AD1 - Perform basic and higher-level math operations, e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, units of conversion, averaging, percentage, proportion, ratios, numbering systems
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create interactive sports-themed stations that demonstrate the use of algebraic equations in calculating speed, distance, and time. They will also develop skits or demonstrations for the 'Mathletes Showcase' to illustrate these concepts in sports scenarios. Additionally, students will produce a report analyzing real-time game data collected in collaboration with local athletes, presenting their findings and predictions.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Sports Stat Lab' where students collaborate with local athletes to gather and analyze real-time game data. Students will use algebraic equations to generate insights and predictions about performance metrics such as speed, distance, and time. This interactive session will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of algebraic concepts in sports contexts.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Mathletes Showcase' where students perform skits or demonstrations that highlight the use of algebraic equations in sports scenarios, such as calculating the optimal speed for a race or determining the time needed to cover a certain distance. Invite family, friends, and community members to engage with the presentations, providing feedback and celebrating students' understanding and creativity. Ensure each student has a role in the presentation, whether through acting, explaining, or setting up the demonstrations, to foster a sense of belonging and accomplishment.
