Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in designing a practical and impactful learning opportunity that enhances durable skills through human-centered design. By working collaboratively, students will explore how to improve skills such as communication, problem-solving, or critical thinking, while also understanding the role of public policy and government influence in shaping educational experiences. This project encourages students to reflect on their learning journey, advocate for their needs, and present their findings in a school-wide exhibition, fostering a deeper understanding of both the learning process and their role in influencing positive change.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design and implement an engaging learning experience that enhances a specific durable skill, such as critical thinking or effective communication, for diverse learners. They will develop self-advocacy by identifying allies and resources to support their projects. Through understanding public policy and influencing government, students will explore how these skills can impact real-world issues. The project will culminate in a school-wide exhibition where students present their learning experiences and reflect on their growth through video reflections and peer feedback.
Competencies
  • Self-Advocacy - Identifying allies (LL.SD.3.a)
  • Governments - Public policy (FK.SS.1.c)
  • Politics - Influencing government (FK.SS.2.a)

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively create a series of interactive workshops focused on developing a chosen durable skill, such as effective communication or problem-solving. Each team will design a hands-on activity that incorporates human-centered design principles, ensuring it is engaging and accessible for diverse learners. By the end of the project, students will present their workshops at the all-school exhibition, showcasing their learning process, the impact of their activities, and the reflections gathered from participants.

Launch

Kick off the project with a series of interactive icebreaker games that focus on collaboration and communication, such as "Build the Tallest Tower" using limited materials. After each game, facilitate a reflection session where students discuss teamwork dynamics and identify allies who can support their learning journey. This will set the stage for understanding durable skills and human-centered design, encouraging students to think about how they can apply these skills to influence government and public policy effectively.

Exhibition

At the end of the semester, students will showcase their designed learning experiences at an all-school exhibition. Each team will present interactive demonstrations of their projects, allowing attendees to engage with and experience the skill-building activities firsthand. Students will also prepare video reflections to be displayed, highlighting their learning journey and the impact of their projects. This exhibition will include opportunities for students to discuss their design process, receive feedback from peers and visitors, and connect their projects to public policy and government influences.
