Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with practical French language skills for real-world interactions in a restaurant setting. Through engaging, hands-on activities, students will practice ordering food, expressing dietary preferences, and understanding cultural dining etiquette. This immersive approach aims to build students' confidence in using French conversationally, fostering deeper cultural understanding and collaboration with peers and community members.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to express food preferences and dietary needs in French using key phrases and vocabulary, enhancing their communication skills in a restaurant setting. They will engage in collaborative activities to deepen their understanding of cultural dining etiquette and improve their conversational proficiency through hands-on experiences with native speakers. Through role-playing and mock restaurant exercises, students will gain confidence in ordering meals and interacting in French, fostering socio-emotional growth and critical thinking in real-world scenarios.

Students will create a 'French Cuisine Pop-up Restaurant' at school, where they will take on roles as servers and chefs, using their French language skills to take orders and explain dishes to guests. They will design and present a French menu in a simulated restaurant setting, incorporating learned vocabulary and phrases to demonstrate understanding of menu navigation and personal food preferences. Additionally, students will collaborate with a French-speaking chef to prepare authentic dishes, showcasing their culinary skills and cultural understanding.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'French Culinary Adventure' scavenger hunt, where students search for ingredients and recipes for traditional French dishes. This hands-on activity will immerse students in the language as they explore cooking and menu navigation. Collaborate with a local French-speaking chef to decode and design a menu, practicing ordering and conversational skills in a simulated restaurant setting.
