Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 8th-grade students in a real-world project that combines financial literacy with creative problem-solving. Through collaborative activities, students will design a budget-conscious vacation, fostering critical thinking and socio-emotional skills. By working with community partners and presenting their projects, students will develop a deeper understanding of planning and budgeting, preparing them for future challenges.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design vacation itineraries, enhancing their skills in teamwork and communication while considering diverse perspectives. Through critical analysis and creative problem-solving, they will develop a deeper understanding of financial literacy and budgeting strategies. By creating digital travel guide prototypes, students will apply their knowledge of technology and multimedia tools to craft personalized and cost-effective travel plans. Throughout the project, students will reflect on their socio-emotional growth, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in overcoming budget challenges.

Products

Students will design and develop a digital travel guide app prototype that offers budget-friendly vacation tips, highlights local attractions, and provides personalized itineraries based on user preferences. Throughout the project, students will create multimedia presentations showcasing their vacation itineraries, complete with maps, charts, and images that illustrate their financial literacy and planning skills. They will also produce vision boards and skits for the 'Budget Travel Festival,' demonstrating their understanding of budget management and creative problem-solving in real-world scenarios.

Launch

Begin with a dynamic 'Vacation Vision Workshop' where students use art supplies to craft vision boards that reflect their dream vacations, integrating budget considerations and personal interests. Transition into an 'Itinerary Innovation Lab,' where students collaborate in small groups to design unique vacation itineraries. Utilize multimedia tools and resources from the local tourism board to explore cost-effective travel options, fostering creativity and teamwork from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Budget Travel Festival' where they present their vacation plans through engaging skits or short plays. These performances will highlight their financial strategies, creative solutions to budget challenges, and the socio-emotional skills developed during the project. The festival will invite community members, including representatives from the local tourism board, to witness the students' innovative approaches to budget-friendly travel planning.
