Purpose

Students will collaboratively create a 'School Storybook' to share their unique perspectives on school life, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Through drawing, dictation, and simple writing, they will explore storytelling, enhance their communication skills, and engage in self-directed learning. This project encourages critical thinking as students consider how to effectively communicate their stories, while peer feedback during the 'Gallery Walk' nurtures a supportive learning environment.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to enable kindergarten students to express their thoughts and ideas through a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing, fostering their ability to compose informative and opinion pieces. Students will explore digital tools to collaboratively produce and publish their work, enhancing their understanding of storytelling and communication. Additionally, the project aims to develop self-directed learning skills as students engage in feedback and reflection, and to cultivate an academic mindset by fostering a sense of identity and belonging within the school community.
Standards
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.6 - With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 - Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.1 - Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g., My favorite book is…).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a collaborative 'School Storybook' where each child contributes a page featuring their drawings and simple sentences about their favorite school activities. Throughout the project, students will engage in storytelling circles to verbally share their ideas, which will then be translated into their storybook contributions. The final product will be a compiled storybook that showcases the diverse experiences and perspectives of the class, allowing students to take pride in their individual and collective work.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "School Adventure Walk," where students explore different areas of the school and capture their observations through drawings and simple notes. Encourage them to notice details about their surroundings and interactions, sparking curiosity and excitement about the stories they can tell. Back in the classroom, facilitate a group discussion where students share their favorite discoveries and brainstorm topics for their 'School Storybook' pages.

Exhibition

Host a 'School Storybook Celebration' where students present their completed pages to classmates, teachers, and family members. Set up a cozy reading corner where each student can narrate their page, using drawings and sentences to highlight their favorite school activities. Encourage visitors to leave encouraging notes or drawings for each student, fostering a supportive community atmosphere. This exhibition will provide an opportunity for students to showcase their work and reflect on their learning journey.
