Purpose

This project aims to nurture students' understanding of human rights and the power of storytelling in promoting fairness and respect. Through hands-on activities, students will explore the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and learn to recognize and challenge 'single stories' that can lead to misconceptions. By engaging with community partners and participating in storytelling workshops, students will develop critical communication skills and personal agency to advocate for justice and equity in their communities.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its significance in promoting fairness and respect globally. They will enhance their communication skills by crafting and sharing narratives that reflect diverse perspectives, challenging stereotypes, and single stories. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will engage in critical reflection, self-directed learning, and problem-solving to address civic issues, fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
Standards
  • D2.Civ.10.3-5 - Identify the beliefs, experiences, perspectives, and values that underlie their own and others' points of view about civic issues.
  • D2.Civ.10.6-8 - Explain the relevance of personal interests and perspectives, civic virtues, and democratic principles when people address issues and problems in government and civil society.
  • D2.Civ.8.K-2 - Describe democratic principles such as equality, fairness, and respect for legitimate authority and rules.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a collaborative digital anthology of personal and community narratives, highlighting diverse perspectives and challenging stereotypes. Each student will contribute a story that reflects their understanding of human rights and justice, supported by illustrations or multimedia elements. The anthology will be shared with community partners and presented at a culminating event, where students will engage in dialogue with attendees to discuss the themes and insights from their stories.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Story Swap Day' where students partner with peers and community members to exchange personal narratives. This event will focus on identifying and challenging 'single stories,' fostering understanding through diverse perspectives. Students will engage in interactive activities and role-playing scenarios facilitated by local human rights organizations, setting the stage for deeper exploration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Exhibition

Organize a "Voices for Justice Fair" where students present their storytelling projects to peers, family, and community members. Each student will have a booth to showcase their narratives, highlighting diverse perspectives and challenging stereotypes. Invite local human rights organizations to participate, providing feedback and engaging in dialogue with students. Incorporate interactive elements, such as live storytelling sessions or digital presentations, to engage the audience and facilitate discussions on fairness and respect.
