Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a week-long exploration of the concept of "home" through the lens of space-themed literature and collaborative art projects. Students will deepen their understanding of what makes a home by reflecting on their personal experiences and cultural perspectives, while also developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through interactive games, art creation, and community collaboration, students will cultivate a sense of belonging and self-directed learning, culminating in an exhibition that showcases their creative interpretations and reflections on home.

Learning goals

Students will explore the concept of "home" through the lens of space, fostering self-directed learning by creating art projects and engaging in interactive games that incorporate feedback and reflection. They will develop an academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging, using the books as a springboard for critical reflection. Through critical thinking and problem-solving activities, students will consider innovative approaches to defining home, culminating in the creation of a welcome sign and a drawing of their ideal space home.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will collaboratively create visual art projects that depict their ideal space home, integrating themes from the selected books and personal reflections on what constitutes a home. By the end of the week, each student will produce a drawing of their space home accompanied by a personalized welcome sign. Additionally, students will craft a written piece starting with the prompt "To me, a home is," which will encapsulate their understanding and reflections on the essential question. These products will be showcased in an exhibition, allowing students to share their insights and creativity with peers and community members.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, invite students to bring a small item from home that represents what makes their home special. Begin with a circle time where each student shares their item and explains its significance, fostering a sense of belonging and identity. Then, introduce the essential question, "What makes a home to be a home?" and read aloud a selected passage from a space-themed book, setting the stage for their exploration of homes in space.

Exhibition

Students will present their visual representations of ideal space homes, each accompanied by a personalized welcome sign and a written reflection on "To me, a home is...". This exhibition will be an interactive gallery walk where peers, teachers, and community members can engage with the artwork and reflections. The event will feature a collaborative space-themed game station, allowing visitors to participate in the memory and movement games the students enjoyed during the project.
