Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage students in a meaningful exploration of migration through the lens of personal and community identity. By interacting with adults who have experienced migration, students will deepen their understanding of cultural narratives and develop empathy. Through the creation of art projects, students will critically reflect on their own sense of place and movement, fostering self-directed learning and problem-solving skills. This experience aims to cultivate an academic mindset by connecting students with real-world issues and encouraging thoughtful dialogue and self-assessment.

Learning goals

Students will explore themes of migration through the lens of identity and belonging, using the book "Una Casa Lejos de Casa" as a core text. They will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on their own experiences and receiving feedback from peers and community partners. Through the creation of an art project, students will critically analyze and express their understanding of movement and place, considering innovative solutions to complex questions about migration. The gallery walk will serve as a platform for students to present their work, fostering a sense of community and encouraging critical reflection and self-assessment.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this project, students will collaboratively create an art project that visually represents their understanding of migration, inspired by "Una Casa Lejos de Casa" by Clara Obligado. Each student will contribute to a collective mural or individual pieces that explore the essential questions about movement and identity. The final product will be showcased in a gallery walk, where students will present their artwork to the community partners, engaging in dialogue about their creative process and insights gained.

Launch

Begin the project by organizing a community dialogue with the five adult partners, focusing on personal migration stories and experiences. This initial session will serve as an immersive introduction, allowing students to connect with real-world narratives and understand the complexities of migration. Encourage students to actively listen, ask questions, and reflect on how these stories relate to the essential question, "Where am I? How do I move? Why I move?" This will set the stage for their artistic exploration and critical thinking throughout the week.

Exhibition

Students will create an art project that reflects their understanding of migration, inspired by the book "Una Casa Lejos de Casa." At the end of the week, they will host a gallery walk, inviting community partners to view and discuss their artwork. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to articulate their learning journey, engage in critical reflection, and receive feedback from peers and adults, fostering a deeper connection to the topic and enhancing their self-directed learning skills.
