Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on project where they simulate a global trade market, exchanging goods and services with classmates to understand the impact of trade on daily life. They will explore historical and modern innovations in communication and transportation by creating a timeline that highlights key developments and their effects on trade efficiency. Through role-playing as consumers and producers from different countries, students will examine how globalization connects economies and drives productivity. This experiential approach will help students grasp the complexities of global trade and its relevance to their own lives.

Learning goals

Students will explore the evolution of trade from the past to the present, focusing on the role of communication and transportation innovations. They will investigate how globalization connects consumers and producers worldwide, and analyze its impact on daily life. Through hands-on projects, students will identify factors that contribute to greater productivity in businesses. They will engage in activities that simulate global trade scenarios, fostering an understanding of economic interdependence.

Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3: Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • NGSS - 5-ESS3-1: Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth's resources and environment.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a visual timeline that illustrates the evolution of trade and communication innovations from the past to the present. They will also design a simple business plan for a product that connects global consumers and producers, highlighting how globalization impacts trade. To demonstrate understanding, students will present their timelines and business plans to the class, explaining how these innovations have led to greater productivity in businesses worldwide.

Launch

Begin the lesson by setting up a mini "global trade fair" in the classroom. Assign each student a country and provide them with a simple product to "trade" with their classmates, such as stickers or small toys. Encourage students to negotiate trades, emphasizing the role of communication and transportation in facilitating these exchanges. After the activity, gather students to discuss how their trades were similar to or different from historical trade practices and how innovations have changed the process over time.

Exhibition

Students will create a "Global Trade Fair" where they present projects that showcase how trade has evolved from the past to the present, highlighting key innovations in communication and transportation. Each group will set up a booth representing a different country or historical period, displaying how globalization connects consumers and producers. Students will use visual aids, models, or digital presentations to illustrate their findings, and invite peers, teachers, and family members to explore their exhibits. This interactive fair will allow students to explain how global trade impacts our lives and what factors contribute to greater productivity in businesses.
