Purpose

This project aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop and implement a comprehensive safety plan for their school, focusing on the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. By engaging with local experts and community partners, students will gain real-world insights and experience, enhancing their understanding of hazardous material identification systems and safety protocols. Additionally, students will create public awareness campaigns to educate their community, fostering a safer environment for all.

Learning goals

Students will analyze and differentiate between various hazardous material identification systems, applying this knowledge to create a comprehensive safety plan for their school. They will collaborate with community partners to understand real-world handling, storage, and disposal processes, enhancing their practical skills. Additionally, students will design and execute a public awareness campaign to educate the community on safe practices, demonstrating their ability to communicate complex safety information effectively.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • NGSS - HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.

Products

Students will design and produce a comprehensive safety plan booklet for the school, detailing procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials. They will also create a series of educational videos demonstrating the proper use of hazardous material identification systems and safety protocols. Additionally, students will craft posters and infographics that visually explain guidelines for the safe transportation and disposal of hazardous materials, which will be displayed in public spaces and shared during community events.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Community Hazard Walk,' where students partner with waste management companies to tour local facilities and observe real-world disposal processes. Following the tour, facilitate a group discussion to analyze the implications for school safety plans, encouraging students to connect their observations with the project's objectives. This immersive experience sets the stage for students to brainstorm initial ideas for a comprehensive safety plan, fostering creativity and real-world connections from the start.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Community Safety Day' event where students collaborate with local fire departments and waste management companies to conduct workshops and live demonstrations on safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Host a 'Safety Expo' where students set up interactive booths demonstrating different hazardous material identification systems, safety plans, and disposal methods, inviting community members and partners to learn and engage. Create a 'Hazardous Materials Showcase' where students present their public awareness campaigns through multimedia presentations, art installations, and live demonstrations to educate and entertain the community.
