Purpose

This project aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to design and implement comprehensive workplace safety plans. Through hands-on experiences and collaboration with community partners, students will explore critical aspects of safety inspections, audits, training programs, and emergency response strategies. By engaging in real-world scenarios and creating tangible safety solutions, they will deepen their understanding of workplace safety standards and develop the ability to effectively communicate and apply these principles in diverse environments.

Learning goals

Students will learn how to design comprehensive safety plans and conduct thorough safety audits to prevent workplace accidents. They will develop effective training programs that improve safety standards and create emergency response plans to minimize risks during unexpected events. Through hands-on activities and collaboration with community partners, students will gain practical insights into safety inspection processes, emergency action plans, and ergonomic workstation models, enhancing their understanding of workplace safety and their ability to communicate and apply their knowledge effectively.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • NGSS - HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.

Products

Students will develop a comprehensive emergency response plan tailored to a simulated workplace scenario, showcasing their understanding through role-play demonstrations of various emergency responses. Additionally, they will construct a model of a safe work environment, meticulously labeling elements such as proper lighting, clear walkways, and ergonomic furniture, to be exhibited during the 'Safety Showcase.' Furthermore, students will produce a series of instructional videos detailing diverse safety training methods, featuring student-led demonstrations and expert interviews, and premiere them at the 'Safety Film Festival' for community feedback.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Safety Design Challenge,' where students collaborate in teams to create innovative safety equipment prototypes or ergonomic workstation models. Invite community partners to provide feedback and discuss potential real-world applications. This hands-on activity will spark creativity and set the stage for exploring comprehensive safety plans and audits throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will present their comprehensive safety plans and ergonomic workstation models during a 'Safety Showcase,' where they conduct live demonstrations of training sessions and ergonomic safety practices. Local media and stakeholders will be invited to observe and provide feedback on their innovative approaches, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of workplace safety standards. Additionally, students will produce short films or documentaries highlighting key aspects of workplace safety and training programs, screening them at a 'Safety Film Festival' for peers, community partners, and family members to celebrate their learning achievements.
