Purpose

Students will embark on a journey to develop a business plan for a product that addresses a real-world problem, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. By engaging with the design thinking model, students will explore the complexities of product development, from ideation to execution, while working closely with community partner Chick-fil-A. This project aims to cultivate a learner mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and iterate on their ideas, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship and problem-solving.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking and inquiry skills by researching real-world problems and identifying viable solutions. They will collaborate to create a business plan for a product that addresses a specific issue, learning to articulate and refine their ideas through the design thinking process. By engaging with community partner Chick-fil-A, students will gain insights into successful business strategies and apply these to their projects. The experience will cultivate a learner mindset, fostering resilience and adaptability in problem-solving.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.7: Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Products

Students will collaboratively develop a comprehensive business plan for a product that addresses a specific real-world problem. This plan will include market research, a prototype of the product, and a presentation that outlines their solution and its potential impact. By the end of the project, students will present their business plans and prototypes to representatives from Chick-fil-A, receiving feedback and insights on their ideas.

Launch

Begin the project with a design thinking workshop where students collaborate in small groups to brainstorm real-world problems they are passionate about. Each group will select one problem to focus on and will engage in a rapid prototyping session to sketch initial ideas for a product that addresses their chosen issue. Invite a representative from Chick-fil-A to share insights on product development and business planning, providing students with real-world context and inspiration.

Exhibition

Students will present their business plans and product prototypes at a "Young Entrepreneurs Expo" hosted in collaboration with Chick-fil-A. Each group will set up a booth to showcase their product, including a visual display and a pitch presentation. Community members, including Chick-fil-A representatives, will be invited to provide feedback and ask questions, allowing students to refine their ideas and practice their communication skills. This expo will serve as a platform for students to demonstrate their understanding of real-world problem-solving and business planning.
