Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 3rd-grade students in a collaborative and meaningful exploration of their interests by creating persuasive campaigns that address real community needs. Through hands-on learning, students will develop critical thinking and effective communication skills as they research, write, and present their ideas using digital tools. This project fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to their community while meeting educational standards and competencies.

Learning goals

Students will develop their ability to compose opinion pieces by researching community issues they are passionate about, using digital tools to create persuasive campaigns. They will enhance their skills in critical thinking by analyzing different perspectives and forming evidence-based conclusions. Effective communication will be fostered as students engage with diverse audiences, presenting their ideas clearly and collaboratively. Through digital citizenship, students will learn to responsibly create and share content, culminating in a community exhibition of their projects.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Effective Communicator - Engages diverse audiences respectfully by exchanging ideas and information responsibly, listening actively, speaking and writing clearly, and using print and digital media appropriately.

Products

Students will create a digital presentation or video using platforms like Canva or Deck to showcase their persuasive campaign on a community issue they are passionate about. Throughout the project, they will develop opinion pieces supported by research, using digital tools to enhance their communication. These products will be shared with peers, parents, and community partners during the exhibition, allowing students to refine their work based on feedback and demonstrate their understanding and perspectives.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Passion Pitch Fest' where each student presents a brief pitch about a community issue they care about and how they might address it. Encourage students to use visual aids or props to make their ideas more engaging. Invite community partners and peers to provide constructive feedback, helping students refine their focus and approach for their persuasive campaigns. This event sets the stage for collaboration and idea exchange, sparking excitement and commitment to their chosen topics.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their digital campaigns at a community exhibition attended by parents, peers, and local partners. Each student will present their work using digital platforms like Canva or video presentations, highlighting their opinion pieces and proposed solutions to community issues. The exhibition will include interactive stations where students can engage with attendees, receive feedback, and discuss the impact of their projects.
