Purpose

This project immerses students in the exploration of historical influences on American governance through creative expression. By crafting and performing songs, students actively engage with classical and Enlightenment philosophies, enhancing their understanding of foundational government principles. The project fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills, while connecting historical contexts to modern-day governance. Through hands-on activities and peer interactions, students develop a nuanced appreciation of historical events and their lasting impact on society.

Learning goals

Students will analyze and interpret the influence of classical philosophy, natural rights philosophy, and English common law on the American Founders. They will develop skills in creative expression by writing and performing songs that incorporate historical events and philosophies. Through podcast creation and peer review, students will enhance their communication and critical thinking skills, while also fostering empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives. By constructing visual timelines, they will synthesize information to identify patterns of influence on American governance.

Products

Students will create a series of engaging podcasts, each exploring a historical figure or event that shaped American governance, using interviews and music to bring history to life. They will also produce a song, either a parody or original, that creatively illustrates the influence of classical philosophy, natural rights philosophy, and English common law on American government. Additionally, students will craft a visual timeline connecting key historical events to the development of American government, demonstrating their understanding of historical influences. Finally, students will showcase their work in a 'History Music Video Premiere,' presenting their recorded songs with creative visuals to the school community.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Musical Montage Mixer' where students explore and analyze songs from various historical periods, discussing how music has been a tool for conveying political and philosophical ideas. This interactive session will engage students in identifying themes and messages within the music, setting the stage for their own creative songwriting process. Encourage students to share their thoughts on how these songs reflect the historical contexts and philosophies they will be studying in the project.

Exhibition

Host a dynamic 'History Music Video Premiere' event where students present their recorded song performances, complete with engaging visuals that highlight the historical influences on American governance. Invite the school community, including peers, teachers, and family members, to attend and participate in discussions about the historical connections depicted in the videos. This exhibition not only celebrates students' creative and analytical efforts but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the historical foundations of American government.
