Purpose

This project invites students to explore the complex character of Grendel's mother through a critical lens, encouraging them to question and reinterpret historical narratives. By researching the Anglo-Saxon era and engaging in creative storytelling, students will develop a deeper understanding of how cultural and historical contexts shape literary portrayals. The experience culminates in students presenting their modern retellings, fostering a space for dialogue and reflection on diverse perspectives and contemporary themes. This project aims to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and an appreciation for the power of narrative to challenge and transform perceptions.

Learning goals

Students will analyze the cultural and historical contexts of the Anglo-Saxon era to understand the original portrayal of Grendel's mother. They will develop skills in research, critical thinking, and creative writing by crafting their own modern retellings that incorporate diverse perspectives. Through multimedia presentations and reflective gallery walks, students will articulate how their reinterpretations challenge traditional narratives and demonstrate an understanding of how historical contexts shape character portrayals.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.9: Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.5: Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive multimedia presentation analyzing the cultural and historical contexts of Grendel's mother, using video, images, and sound to support their modern reinterpretations. They will also produce a creative writing piece that offers a modern retelling of Grendel's mother's story, reflecting diverse perspectives and contemporary themes. The final product will be showcased in a gallery walk, where students present their reinterpretations alongside reflective statements on challenging traditional narratives.

Launch

Kick off the project with an immersive role-play activity where students step into the shoes of Anglo-Saxon storytellers. Set the scene with atmospheric music and visuals of the era, and have students collaboratively craft and perform a brief oral tale that includes Grendel's mother, using only the knowledge they currently possess. This will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring deeper cultural narratives and modern reinterpretations throughout the project.

Exhibition

Host an interactive exhibition where students display their creative retellings of Grendel's mother's story. Set up stations where each student presents their multimedia analysis, allowing visitors to engage with the historical and cultural insights that informed their reinterpretations. Encourage attendees to leave feedback and questions, fostering a dialogue about the evolving narratives and perspectives. Conclude with a panel discussion where students reflect on their learning journey and the impact of their modern interpretations.
