Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage second-grade students in understanding how weathering and erosion shape the environment around them through hands-on, real-world exploration in West Fargo, ND. By collaborating with a local geologist and conducting simple experiments, students will develop a deeper comprehension of these natural processes. The activities aim to foster curiosity and critical thinking, encouraging students to observe and document changes in their community, thus connecting classroom learning to their everyday world.

Learning goals

Students will explore how weathering and erosion shape the environment by identifying real-world examples in West Fargo, ND, and analyzing their impact. They will enhance their understanding of informational texts by identifying main ideas and supporting details related to geological processes. Additionally, students will develop skills in using text features to comprehend and present information effectively. Through hands-on experiments and collaboration with a local geologist, students will deepen their scientific inquiry and communication skills.

Standards
  • 2.R.3.A - Identify the main idea with supporting details during or after reading an informational text or passage.
  • 2.R.6 - Identify text features (e.g., timeline, maps/legends, graphs/charts, subheadings) and use previously learned text features (e.g., table of contents, headings, captions, diagrams, bold/underlined words) to read and understand a text or passage.

Products

Students will create a 'Weathering and Erosion Reflection Journal' to document their learning journey, including observations, questions, and insights from each activity. They will also develop and conduct a simple experiment, such as simulating rainfall on a sandcastle, and present their findings to the class. Additionally, students will collaboratively create a class mural or diorama depicting local examples of weathering and erosion in West Fargo, ND, integrating knowledge gained from the geologist's visit and their own community observations.

Launch

Begin the lesson with an outdoor exploration walk around a local area in West Fargo, ND, such as a nearby park or the school grounds. Encourage students to observe and collect evidence of weathering and erosion, such as cracks in the pavement, worn-down rocks, or eroded soil. Back in the classroom, have students share their findings and discuss how these natural processes might have occurred. Use this activity to introduce the essential question and spark curiosity about the changes in the landscape around them.

Exhibition

Host a "Weathering and Erosion Showcase" in West Fargo, ND, where students present their experiments and reflection journals to classmates, teachers, and family members. Set up stations where each student can demonstrate their experiment, explain their findings, and share insights from their journals. Invite the local geologist to provide feedback and engage with students' presentations, fostering a deeper understanding and connection to real-world applications. Encourage students to create visual displays, such as posters or diagrams, to complement their presentations and highlight key learning points.
