Purpose

In this project, students will engage in a journey through time by exploring their own identities and relationships within the school community. Through creating both a physical and digital time capsule, they will document personal artifacts, dreams, and favorite memories, fostering a sense of belonging and anticipation for the future. This hands-on experience encourages self-reflection and collaboration, allowing students to appreciate their unique contributions while understanding the shared values that unite them as a school family.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of time by exploring the concepts of past, present, and future through personal storytelling and sharing. They will enhance their social skills by collaborating with peers to create both a physical and digital time capsule, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Students will practice self-expression and communication by articulating their dreams and favorite memories, contributing to their growth in language arts and emotional development.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.4: Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference.

Products

Students will create a personalized time capsule containing drawings, photos, and written notes about their current favorite things, dreams for the future, and special memories. Each student will also contribute to a collaborative class mural that visually represents their collective journey of past, present, and future. By the end of the project, students will have both a physical time capsule to be buried in the school garden and a digital scrapbook that captures their individual and shared experiences, which will be revisited when they complete 8th grade.

Launch

Begin the project by gathering students in a circle to share a special object or picture from home that represents something important from their past. Encourage each child to explain why their item is meaningful to them. After everyone has shared, introduce the concept of a time capsule and discuss how these items reflect who they are now and who they might become. Conclude the launch by collectively decorating both a physical time capsule box and a digital time capsule, allowing each student to add their personal touch, symbolizing their contribution to the school family.

Exhibition

During the "Time Capsule Celebration," students will share their contributions with classmates and families, presenting both a favorite item or memory from their past and a dream for their future through drawings or simple artifacts. The event will culminate in the burial of a physical time capsule in the school garden, symbolizing the students' shared journey. Additionally, a digital time capsule will be created, capturing photos and videos of the ceremony and presentations, to be revisited in the future. This exhibition will allow students to express their individuality and connect with others, fostering a sense of community and shared history.
