The purpose of this project is to engage students in a comprehensive exploration of environmental challenges within their community, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through collaboration with local businesses and community partners, students will gain insights into sustainable practices and develop actionable solutions. By writing for both formal and informal audiences, students will enhance their communication skills and contribute to raising awareness and driving positive change in their community.
Learning goals
Students will develop research skills by investigating local environmental issues, analyzing data, and identifying root causes and impacts. They will enhance their writing abilities by crafting formal proposals and informal blog posts tailored to different audiences. Students will gain practical experience in sustainable practices through hands-on activities and collaboration with community partners. They will refine their ability to present complex ideas through multimedia presentations, integrating diverse perspectives and sources. Additionally, students will strengthen their critical thinking and communication skills through peer review and feedback sessions.

Products
Throughout the project, students will create a series of products including formal proposals detailing their solutions to local environmental challenges, informal blog posts to raise community awareness, and multimedia presentations that showcase their research findings and proposed solutions. By the end of the learning experience, students will organize a pop-up exhibition in a local community space, displaying their work and engaging with community members for feedback. Additionally, students will participate in a Community Impact Fair where they present their findings and solutions to local stakeholders, fostering discussions on potential implementation strategies.
Launch
Kick off the project with a 'Sustainability Scavenger Hunt' where students explore their community to identify local environmental challenges and existing green initiatives. This activity encourages collaboration and discussion with community partners who can provide insights and inspiration for potential project ideas. Students will document their findings and use them as a foundation for their research and writing tasks throughout the project.
Exhibition
Students will present their research and proposed solutions at a 'Community Impact Fair,' showcasing multimedia presentations that highlight their findings and community-based initiatives. This event will invite local stakeholders, community members, and families to engage with the projects, providing feedback and discussing potential implementation strategies. The fair will serve as a platform for students to articulate their learning journey, demonstrate the real-world impact of their work, and foster connections with community partners.
