Purpose

This project aims to immerse young students in the fascinating world of plant ecosystems, focusing on the critical role of plant sap. Through hands-on investigations and collaborative learning experiences, students will explore how sap influences plant health, insect behavior, and broader ecological interactions. By engaging with local experts and conducting experiments, students will develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of nature, fostering curiosity and scientific thinking.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of the ecological role of plant sap, including its interactions with insects and other living things. They will enhance their observation and inquiry skills through hands-on investigations and peer feedback sessions. Students will also cultivate communication abilities by sharing their findings and reflections in both written and oral formats. Through collaboration with community partners, they will gain experiential knowledge and appreciation for local ecosystems. Finally, students will learn to design and conduct experiments, fostering scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.

Standards
  • NGSS - 2-LS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
  • NGSS - 3-LS4-3: Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create detailed observation sketches and notes in their reflection journals from the 'Sap Detective Day' and botanical garden visits. They will also produce digital portfolios documenting their sap experiments and findings. By the end of the project, students will craft engaging stories about plant life, focusing on sap's journey and its ecological role, which they will present during the 'Botanical Showcase.' These stories will serve as both a creative expression and an educational tool during guided tours for families and peers.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Sap Detective Day,' where students become investigators in the school garden or nearby park. Equipped with magnifying glasses and simple tools, they will explore plants to find sap trails and signs of insect activity. Students will document their discoveries in reflection journals, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for deeper exploration into the role of plant sap in ecosystems.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Botanical Showcase' at the local botanical garden, leading guided tours for their families and peers. During the tours, they will share insights about plant sap and its ecological significance, using their reflection journals as storytelling tools. This exhibition will allow students to demonstrate their understanding and engage the community in learning about the vital role of plant sap in ecosystems.
